Over 1.45 million Americans are currently living with T1D, and the disease is growing at a rate of 2.9% every year. It’s important for state and federal elected officials and regulators to understand the challenges faced by families affected by T1D, and what the government can do to help.
Federal and state progress has been mixed in helping people living with T1D and those who will ultimately be diagnosed with the disease. The typical American with diabetes experiences over $19,700 per year in healthcare costs. Helping Americans in better managing the challenges of a chronic autoimmune condition, such as insurance coverage, high medical costs, prescription drug access, and making medical technology affordable and accessible should be priorities.
Early detection through screening, in particular, can help people better plan for and manage a potential diagnosis. Legislative action is currently underway to enact screening laws that assist individuals and families in accessing T1D screening.
